Hailed as “the true poetess of clothing” by French haute couture magazine Stiletto, Marit is a multi-disciplinary artist and fashion designer mixing deep concepts with feelings, sensitivity and eye-catching form. Her goal is to create good feelings and special atmosphere in whatever she is currently working at, from conceptual art to site-specific installations, fashion, theatre, exhibition and perceptional experience design.
“My main goal is to create experiences, haunting and memorable feelings; to have and to keep – be it a mind blowing space installation or an act of wearing a simple black dress.”
Trained first as a pattern maker in Tallinn, and studying at Danish Design School, Marit graduated with Master Degree in Fashion Design from the Estonian Academy of Arts in 2008. She then gained experience in London, Antwerp, Paris and Berlin, working for labels like Bruno Pieters, Camilla Staerk and pattern making atelier Trois Quarts. Arising from a passion for concepts, pattern-making and tailoring, Ilison’s work is a mesh of deep ideas and precise, often time-consuming technical execution yet designing timeless ready-to-wear pieces that allow for effortless dressing and comfort when it comes to fashion design.
Ilison has been awarded with the Estonian most prominent art award Kristjan Raud Prize and Young Designer Award SÄSI, she was the finalist of the prestigious 29th Hyéres Fashion competition and was named as Vogue Talent in 2014. In 2015 and 2016 Ilison was invited back to Hyéres to take part of the festival’s alumni The Formers showroom. In June 2016 Marit Ilison was honoured, when the cult boutique 10 Corso Como invited Ilison to present her AW16 collection in their Milan store.
Ilison’s projects have been featured in different international magazines like The New York Times, Vogue Paris, Vogue Italy, Women’s Wear Daily, Dezeen, Stiletto, It’s Nice That and VICE among others.
